Although this is not a lifetime committment, you still will
be lugging around your stuff quite a bit so shop around and
try different styles. Don't buy a pack because of its color
or how nice it looks, color and looks won't help you! Here
are a few things to consider when choosing your backpack:
WEIGHT:
You should feel comfortable carrying at least 25-30 pounds.
When trying out different styles ask the sales person for
weights to put inside pack so that you'll have an idea of
what 30 pounds feels like on your back. Sometimes they'll
even have sandbags that give a more realistic feel.
SIZE:
Your backpack should be proportional to your body size.
If possible, get a pack that you won't have to check in
at the airport (size requirements vary, but a good rule
of thumb is to make sure L x W x H doesn't add up to more
than 45 inches). Not having to waste your time checking
and claiming your pack is one of the best things about traveling
light. However, do consider a slightly bigger pack if you
are carrying winter clothes or a sleeping bag.
PACK FEATURES: - Panel Loading: Has zippers that open around 2/3
of the pack. These are more practical than top-loading backpacks
that often require taking out almost everything in your
pack just to find one thing. - Internal Frame No bulky metal rods sticking out
is great in terms of comfort and it won't get caught on
everything you pass. - Padded Hip Belt Since you carry most of your pack's
weight on your hips, make sure the hip belt is comfortable
to wear. - Padded Shoulder Straps Makes carrying your pack
more comfortable. - Sternum Strap Helps bring weight of load forward
by connecting the two shoulder straps over your sternum,
which saves you from excessive shoulder pain. - Contoured/Padded Back another comfort feature - Daypack a removable daypack makes it easier to
travel during the day.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:
Can you lock the zippers?
Is it water resistant or can it be treated so it is water
resistant?
Does it come with a warrenty and what does it cover?
